Orchestra Wins Contest – Kishi Bashi Comes To SSHS
There’s nothing like seeing a winning trend continue. On the heels of a winning student video resulting in $25,000 of brand new band instruments last year, the Orchestra tried its hands in a similar contest.
D’Addadrio Strings, a New York company with its offices and manufacturing plant on Long Island, announced a contest with one of its leading artists – Kishi Bashi. Kishi is an up and coming artist that is blends traditional violin approaches with 21st century technologies, techniques, and styles. The contest was to download some of Kishi’s lastest pieces, learn them, and then submit a video of the orchestra playing the piece. The winning school would have Kishi attend their spring concert and work with the students.
Orchestra teacher Jessica LaBello presented the idea to the students and they jumped at the opportunity. The energy and focus that the students brought to the project was just amazing! Their video not only includes great playing, but also choreographed movement and a bacon suit. That’s right, a BACON SUIT.
All that effort and hard work paid off! Kishi selected their video one of the winners!
Kishi will be attending the May 18th spring concert at the high school. This is a concert that you do not want to miss! Get there early to get a good seat.
Congratulations to the students and teachers that made this happen. It’s a great achievement and another great opportunity for our students.
